Issues of race continually appear in the construction of slavery, its expansion and the birth of the American republic. Using the provided sources and documents and other sources of your choice, examine how and why the categorization of race is strictly an American concept.  Additionally, examine why the British rapidly expanded slavery in the 1600s and then reconsidered their decision between the late 1700s and early 1800s. What event or events led to the changes of attitudes and opinions on Africans? And how did these events change the focus of the colonial structure and support the quest for independence?  Ultimately what role did the slaves and slavery play in obtaining America’s freedom and then the formation of the new nation?
