Instruction This assignment requires you to compare and contrast TWO types of organisation (ONE from the manufacturing sector CARS, and ONE from the service-sector LIBRARY).The Task Your task is to write a report on how you envisage that ‘Lean’ principles could be applied in your two selected organisations. Specifically, you are required to:
a) Identify and explain four different types of waste you might expect to find in the core operations activities of each of your selected organisations CARS AND LIBRARY (real or imaginary ones). You should provide some evidence, or a sound rationale for the types of waste identified. I DON’T NEED DEFINITION OF THE WASTES. You should use 4 of this waste for car and 4 for library you can only repeat 1 waste as they are 7 so 4 waste for car and 4 for library.
Wastes:(waiting time, over production, transport, process, inventory, defects, motion)
(30% of marks
b) Explain how the application of ‘Lean’ principles could practically help your selected organisations reduce or eliminate four types of waste which identified in part (a). You should address each organisation separately, at this stage.
(50% of marks)
c) Taking the parts (a) and (b) into account, identify and explore the similarities and differences between your selected organisations in their ‘Lean’ implementation programmes.
(20% of marks)
Criteria You will be assessed largely on your ability to relate and discuss the application of ‘Lean’ principles to the real-life context of your two selected organisations. A report, which primarily focuses on describing ‘Lean’ theory and principles, but which fails to address the use of ‘Lean’ techniques in practice, would therefore not be sufficient to achieve a high mark.
