Reflect-7.png

Reflect: Take some time to think about when you enjoy music and when you enjoy film. Do you prefer one over the other? Are you familiar with Hispanic music or movies with Hispanic actors? How about foreign films—do you like them? Would you consider pop culture to be global or does it differ from culture to culture? Consider your responses to the previous questions and carefully review the topics below. When you have reflected on your thoughts for each, you are ready to write your response.

Write: Choose one of the topics, and respond to the questions provided. Your response should be at least 300 words in length in order to provide sufficient detail and to demonstrate critical thought with respect to these cultural practices and gifts to society.

Topic #1: Music

Part 1: What does the diversity of Latin music say about the diversity within Latino cultures and countries? Is this similar or different to the different music represented in the United States and other English speaking countries? What relationship does music have to your identity? Is there any type of music that is an expression of your identity?

Part 2: Which genre of Latin music do you enjoy most? Is it similar to another type of music you listen to? Why do you like it? Provide a link to a Latin song or video that you’d like to share with your classmates. Exercise sound judgement.

Topic #2: Film Choose a Hispanic film that you really liked or one that you’d like to see and view it looking for aspects of Hispanic culture. You may notice things about family, gender roles, celebrations, food, stereotypes, religion, and so forth. In a brief summary, explain your cultural learning. Did it validate anything that was discussed in the different learning weeks of this course? Compare your learning from this film with an American film that you like where you felt like there was cultural learning. What did that cultural learning look like with the American film? Finally, give your film a rating and explain why you would or would not recommend it to your classmates.
